Steps to Decision Making
The steps to decision making can be summarized as follows:
ONE
What is the decision you need to make? (Should I walk or drive?)
TWO
What information do you have available? (What is the distance? What’s the weather going to be like? Is there parking available?)
THREE
What are the alternatives? (Either leave earlier and walk, or leave later and drive, drive and park on the street, drive and use paid parking)
FOUR
Evaluate the alternatives (I feel like walking and clearing my mind. Driving will be easier and I will less stressed)
FIVE
Choose an alternative, make the decision
SIX
Do it, Take action! (Get gas for the drive; prepare your shoes)
SEVEN
Review your decision (Is the weather still nice to walk? Do you need to change your shoes?)
Choosing a potential career path can be challenging but it can easier if you follow the above steps and create a plan.
What is the decision? Full time vs part time?
Facts: interests, abilities, values, work setting, education or training required, salary?
Alternatives: what career options suit me best? what is available within my preferences?
Evidence: what are your short and long term goals? what are the barriers?
Choices: generate your list
Action: informational interviews, create target resumes and cover letters, apply, follow up
Review: did you consider all the evidence? what have you learned? are there new alternatives?
Searching for a new job can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Creating a step by step can help you with your decision making.
