Emotional Intelligence at Work

If we had to describe a person with higher emotional intelligence perhaps we would use descriptors such as: compassionate, self-aware, supportive, good listener, thinker, calm, can read the  room. On the other hand, a person with a lower emotional intelligence could be described as: self-centered, immature, impatient, angry.

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize and understand emotions, using it to build rapport and relationships with others. Being able to connect with human emotions at work can have practical benefits such as better collaboration and a healthier workplace. The skills involved in EI are: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills (Daniel Goleman, American psychologist).

People with the highest level of intelligence (IQ) outperform people with average IQ only 20% of the time, while people with average IQ outperform people with higher IQ 70% of the time. The reason?  Research points to EQ. Someone’s job performance is a combination of IQ, personality, and EQ.

EQ is a combination of personal competence (self-awareness and self-management) and social competence (social awareness and relationship management). Our emotions are present in everything we think, do, and say each day.

A person with a high EQ is self-aware, has emotional self-control, has a positive outlook, is adaptable and achievement oriented. This person can also influence and inspire, coach/mentor others, and is better at conflict management and teamwork.

EQ is the foundation of critical skills and can be developed. People can learn to improve their communication effectiveness, can handle conflict, better their decision making, handle stress better, increase their empathy, and be team players. People who are able to identify how others are feeling can influence decisions, or people who are aware of how stress impacts them can better manage a challenging work environment.
