"What Is Your Greatest Weakness?"

"What Is Your Greatest Weakness?"

It’s all in the approach, think about the context and the content of your statements. You should not mention anything that would interfere with your ability to do the job.

The main goal of this question is to know if you are aware of your weaknesses, if you understand the impact they have on a specific job, and if you are willing to work on them to improve yourself?

Think about presenting your weakness in the same way you present your strengths and character. How?

  1. Your weakness is an asset: because you are an empath, you exercise your competitive intelligence when negotiating or dealing with customers; because you are a perfectionist, you are an excellent proofreader and editor

  2. You are connected with your weakness, you work on it: because reading and speaking a foreign language is essential to your role, you are learning it; or you are completing a certification/seminar/courses

  3. Your weakness has taught you a lesson: you won’t make the same mistake again and that benefits your employer

  4. You have learning objectives: you can compensate for the lack of that skill or you are working on a certification to speed up your expertise

  5. You can speak about a weakness that is not relevant to that specific job: for example public speaking, if you are applying for an administrative position

  6. You can also deflect: your weakness won’t interfere with your job, you can mention that you work well under stress and in a fast-paced environment with clear deadlines

Everybody has weaknesses. The answer an employer is looking for is that you are able and willing to overcome your weakness and you can lean on your team to use all the resources to problem solve.
