Improve your LinkedIn
Your LinkedIn profile is an opportunity to give life and personality to your resume. A great LinkedIn profile can highlight your successes, differentiate you from the competition, and build trust with potential employers.
CONSIDER MAKING THE FOLLOWING UPDATES TO YOUR PROFILE
Headshot photo: ask a friend or family member to take your picture with a plain background and good lighting. Dress up in your best professional attire (this depends on your industry) and smile.
Background photo: this is the space behind your headshot (light blue by default). You can change and personalize this photo. Use your own landscape photo or use a Canva or Unsplash pic.
Your Network: Keep connecting with people you meet. Personalize your invitation to connect, remind them how you met or what you have in common.
Headline: you can edit this section and change it to a tagline. This is your brand, make if memorable and use keywords that describe your uniqueness. Review the profiles of other professionals in your industry, look at those who share your same expertise - what are their titles and keywords?
About Section: While you are looking at headlines, also check out the “About” sections. Then, grab pen and paper and write your own “About” section, this is a summary of who you are and what you have to offer. Use your own voice and write in the first person (“I….”). What is unique about your skills and experience? If I am a hiring manager, why would I want to hire you?
Write to Engage: hiring managers and recruiters. Don’t copy and paste your resume, be creative, and show your value.
Ask for recommendations and endorsements. These are your past or current: bosses, peers, customers, students in your classes, professors, who else?
Join LinkedIn groups: think about niche groups in your field of expertise.
