What are YOUR Career Goals?
As you start the process of thinking about your short and long term goals, take a minute to stop and breathe.
We tend to be in such a rush that it seems difficult to think beyond what has been done. Think about what can be done in the future, what might be possible for you?
When we approach goal setting with peace and freedom, we are generally more inspired, creative, and motivated. We become more visionary.
Two approaches to goal setting are to use GROW or SMART techniques but the most important thing to consider is that you have to take responsibility and be accountable.
GROW
G - set your short and long-term goals
R - research reality
O - look for options, alternatives, and courses of action
W - decide what is to be done, when, by whom, and have the will to do it
SMART
Specific (simple, sensible, significant).
Measurable (meaningful, motivating).
Achievable (agreed, attainable).
Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based).
Time bound (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive).
Once you have set up your goals, don’t let your mind discourage you. Sometimes, we carry negative assumptions such as “You are crazy, that’s too much”, “It can’t be done”, “It will cost too much”, “You don’t have time”. Instead, turn those statements into “What if…?” statements such as “Wha if you had the funds?”, “What if you find the time?”
Your short-term goals could be to learn a new skills, get a promotion or obtain a certification. Your long-term goals could be to make a career switch, become the CEO of your company, or to start your own business.
Take some time to decide what is next on your to-do list.
