What’s in YOUR Professional Development schedule?
I’ve recently completed a review session of 25 resumes of professionals in a wide range of occupations. Some of the titles were Compliance Officer, Social Work Mediator, Product Manager, Lead Learning & Training Specialist, Population Health Care Manager, Content Producer, Enterprise Risk Manager, Financial Reporting Specialist, and Public Relations Coordinator, among others. Each coaching session was so much more than resume writing, it led to a process of questioning and discovery.
Everyone has a career that is alive. Our careers are in a constant state of change, they evolve, and we get to drive them, and this is the key to remember - we are in charge.
Here are some other reminders:
· Finding clarity leads to achieving career goals, take the time to decide what comes next
· Researching options is necessary for better decision making: inquire, investigate
· Analyzing gaps between your resume and the job posting of your target position would help you plan your own professional development
YOU get to decide what do you most want to learn and that is best aligned with your career goals.
Make a learning plan
Schedule your training - yes, don’t wait - it could be formal or informal (you can learn on your own)
Seek a mentor and an accountability learning partner
Advocate and get your boss to support your professional development initiatives (conference, webinars, professional associations’ membership)
Advance your Career
