Career Plan
A career development plan is:
YOUR PERSONAL ACTION PLAN
NOW: Where you are now in your career
TOMORROW: Where you want to go in your career
THEN: The obstacles you must overcome to reach your tomorrow
HOW: development to reach your intended tomorrow
In previous blogs, we talked about having a professional development schedule, establishing career goals, and evaluating career options.
Your personalized career development plan will help you to identify specific and achievable career goals, and then design and implement strategies to reach your goals.
Everyone has a career that is alive. Our careers are in a constant state of change, take a pause to reassess and discover what is the next step you want to take.
NOW
Think about your past experiences? make a list to answer each question
What do you enjoy doing?
What are you doing when you feel most engaged or motivated at work?
What energizes you and what drains you?
Do you have specific world issues you would like to help solve?
Do you prefer leading a group, working with peers or working alone?
What kinds of skills do you have?
What are some examples of things you want to learn?
Would you like to pursue additional education (graduate school, certification, other)?
What kinds of events would you like to participate in? (conferences, workshops, webinars)
TOMORROW
Think long term - close your eyes…what do you see yourself doing?
Do you want to still be at your current company but in a more senior role?
Do you want to work in a more senior role at a different company?
Do you want a similar job at another company?
Do you want a similar job in a different industry?
Do you want to change careers altogether?
THEN
Once you have completed the NOW AND TOMORROW steps, it’s time to start planning
What are the gaps between your NOW and TOMORROW?
Can you identify transferable skills to move forward?
What about relevant experiences that can help you market yourself?
Can you talk to some people who are currently doing the job you desire next?
Do you need extra training? Can you identify how to fill the gaps: experience, skills, specific knowledge?
HOW
It’s time to set your goals
Think about your options for advancement AND Use goal setting strategies
Keep track and reassess
Remain flexible and adjust, life happens
